Huck Finn

Huck Finn Reflection

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has been the topic of discussion for many schools due the content in the book. It has been banned from many schools because of the use of the N-word and it advocates slavery. Because of this many people think that Mark Twain was a raciest but that theory is wrong because Mark Twain was clearly not a racist he voices his opinion on slavery through Jim. Through the character Jim Mark Twain expresses his opinion on the slave trade and slavery and how it is immoral.

In chapter eight is the first chapter after Huck's disappearance that Jim is reintroduced in the book. In this chapter Jim talks about how Miss. Watson wants to sell him to New Orleans for eight hundred dollars. This is the reason that Jim runs away because if she sells him to New Orleans he will be separated form his family. In this chapter it talks about the issue that during the time of slavery many black families were separated just so that the owner could make a profit. Mark Twain thoughts on the matter are expressed through Jim’s actions. Since Jim runs away twain was saying that it’s wrong for people to separate other people and that were all human beings in the end. The slave trade affected many people not just the ones that were sold. This isn’t the only part of the book where twain express his feelings about slavery.

In chapter twenty-three of the book Jim express deep emotion to Huck on the raft about his family and the errors he made as a father. This is another great example of how Mark Twain feels about slavery. This chapter adds to more character to Jim. It shows even though the white has treated him badly he still is able to forgive those who treated him badly. In the chapter twain was explaining how Jim is a human and the inhuman image that was given to blacks is wrong.

The last chapter of Huck Finn Mark twain gives his final message about his thoughts on slavery when Jim is final freed after he almost was hanged by an angry mob. Mark twain’s thought on the matter is that it is ridicules to treat anyone has though they were a piece of property. The idea they were going to hang a man just because he was someone property and ran away is ridicules that they didn’t even view him as an equal until the some papers said he was free.

Even though Huck Finn has been banned form many schools because the ideas presented in the book aren’t clear doesn’t mean that Mark Twain was a racist. He expressed his ideas through the character Jim and the character Huck. Just because Mark Twain doesn’t express his ideas clearly in the book doesn’t mean the examples of racism he uses are his ideals.
